MWCAs Service Learning Partnership creates an educational environment for young adults and community groups. Combining service and learning opportunities, projects benefit both the local community and the Woodlands. The Partnership also teaches students how to build strong grass roots participation by connecting the classroom to their communities. Service Learning sows the seeds of hope and inspiration by making learning more engaging and relevant. The Partnerships biggest project so far involved 27 botany students from the Mendocino Community High School who researched, planned and built a self-guided interpretive trail adjacent to Camp Three along the east side of the Little North Fork of Big River. Complete in June 2002, the trail has a new trailhead, information boards, bridges, benches and a brochure to guide hikers along the way. Another project is the effort of both wood shop students from Fort Bragg High School and the Mendocino Boy Scouts to install bat houses at the Woodlands. When much-needed re-roofing closed off nooks and crannies used by eight species of bats for roosting and nesting, it became necessary to give the bats new homes. Multi-chambered bat boxes have been built, painted and installed. Upcoming projects include watershed restoration and stream monitoring, trail construction, upgrading the Pond Loop Trail to meet handicap-accessible standards, constructing wildife viewing blinds, and installing an interpretive exhibit.
